BOOK LAUNCH

Book Launch for Phil Shaw's Shelf-Obsession > OCTOBER 28

Black Dog and Type Books invite you to the launch of Dr. Phil Shaw's Shelf-Obsession

Fully illustrated, Shelf Obsession encompasses Shaw's life story, as well as critical essays on his work from an international selection of writers and artists. Published by Black Dog Publishing, the monograph focuses on Shaw's bookshelf prints, as well as exploring his early work and sculpture, and is complete with large-scale detail photographs highlighting some of his most effective titles.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr Phil Shaw is a ground-breaking British digital-printmaker, who creates hyper-real images of great formal elegance and conceptual richness.

His distinctive ‘bookshelf’ prints interrogate the changing place of the printed word in a digital age, and the transfer of meaning through inter-textuality. A master of ink technology, he uses a specialized eight-colour printing process on Hahnemuhle paper. In 2004, one of these works was chosen as ‘Print of the Year’ by the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Shaw was also commissioned by David Cameron to create the thought-provoking print that was presented to world leaders at the G8 Summit in Northern Ireland in 2013, which now forms part of the National Art Collection. More recently, he was featured on the front of the The Times’ Arts pages, as the ‘critics’ pick’ during London Art Week, and was on the cover of The South China Morning Post in their coverage of Art Central Hong Kong 2015. In 2017, he was invited to present a solo exhibition at Photo London in Somerset House, London.

'Everything I do is in some sense a commentary on questions relating to what we believe, what we think we believe and what we are told to believe. Puns both literary and visual have always fascinated me, and all my work has this fascination as its primary ingredient.' - Phil Shaw
