THE CHOSEN ONES

The Toronto Star talks to Type Books about curation in independent bookstores

"How much is that novel in the window? The charmingly cool Queen West staple is famous for its artfully crafted window displays, primarily the work of “craftician” Kalpna Patel. “It reflects the personality of the staff for sure because everyone has had a hand in choosing what is in there,” says Patel, 35. The store gets so many questions about the display they now carry a rack inside featuring the books in the window. It’s as much a testament to Patel’s snazzy display as the reputations the booksellers have developed over the store’s 10-year history for astute selections. “If someone has gotten a good recommendation from someone, they are going to ask that person all the time,” Patel says. The January window was a salute to winter’s wonders, embodied in the concept of  hygge, a Danish word that suggests cosy comforts. The eclectic titles include the cooking and crafting guide The Year of Cozy by Adrianna Adarme; true-crime title One of Us by Asne Seierstad, about the 2011 Norway massacre; and Gratitude, Oliver Sacks’s collection of essays on thankfulness."
